The cornhole game is played by two teams, which can have one to two players each. The only equipment needed are two cornhole boards, the cornhole bags and of course a backyard long enough for the cornhole boards to be positioned twenty-seven feet apart for adults, and a little closer for children. The cornhole board consists of a two by four feet (for adults) or one by two feet (for children) platform raised several inches off the ground at the far end, with a hole located also at the far end. The pitcher’s boxes are designated on either side to the cornhole boards.
For singles play, contestants toss bean bags from the same pitcher’s box towards the opposite cornhole board alternately until they have each thrown four cornhole bags, thus completing an inning. Officially, each player has twenty seconds to complete their pitch, commencing when they first step onto the pitcher’s box.
For doubles play, one member from each team pitches on opposite ends from their team member. Contestants from beside the same cornhole board pitch alternately towards the opposite cornhole board until they have thrown four cornhole bags each. The inning is completed when all players have pitched four cornhole bags.
A player receives a corresponding score of three points if their cornhole bag is pitched directly into the hole of the opposite cornhole board, while only one point is awarded if the bag lands on the board. Frequently, cancellation scoring is used. In this case, each point from one team is cancelled by each point gained by the opposing team. Thus, if Team A has a total score of 3 and Team B has a score of 5 in one inning, the actual score for that inning is 2 in favor of Team B. The game ends when a player or team attains a score of at least twenty-one at the end of an inning.
